Would you love to be a work at home mom, but you’re hesitant because you’ve heard stories about online scams and at home work schemes? I can’t say I blame you – the online world can be a little scary sometimes. You’ll do well, though, if you’re careful and research the employers that interest you. You can be either an independent contractor or an employee when you’re a work at home mom. The most important thing to remember is that no company offering legitimate at home work will make you pay to work there.
With legitimate work at home jobs, the only cost you might need to absorb is for a background check, but that won’t even come up unless a company is seriously interested in hiring you. If you’re smart, you’ll ask the company for a copy of your background check once it’s ready.
Some companies are friendly to telecommuting. Here are two suggestions for you to think about:
AT&T: If you’re interested in working from home for a telecommunications provider that’s also a Fortune 500 company, AT&T could be a good choice. The original AT&T was broken up as a result of antitrust litigation; the current company was subsequently launched in 1983. AT&T is based in Dallas, Texas and its stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange.
This multinational conglomerate can be a good fit for a work at home mom because it offers telecommuting opportunities and believes in the importance of balancing work and home. AT&T’s career database does not specifically identify which opportunities are available for at home work, but at last count the company had 12,000 telecommuting positions.
The company’s website says its telecommuting program is comprehensive and arrangements for at home work are made for employees when it makes sense. It also indicates that AT&T has more than 130,000 employees who have enjoyed mobile and remote access that lets them work from almost anywhere, including their homes. AT&T could be a great fit for a work at home mom – just make sure you ask if the job that interests you would be eligible for at home work. A work at home mom doesn’t need to worry about AT&T being a scammer.
IBM: Like AT&T, IBM is a multinational, Fortune 500 corporation that’s publicly traded on the NYSE. Based in Armonk, New York and launched more than 100 years ago, IBM is one of the world’s major information technology and computer companies. And also like AT&T, IBM is definitely not a scammer.
Many of IBM’s business units offer telecommuting opportunities. Sales and marketing positions are probably the most suitable for a work at home mom, but other telecommuting positions are available. Like AT&T, the company’s database does not specifically identify which jobs are telecommuting positions, so you need to ask if management usually approves a particular position for at home work before you apply. Don’t be shy about asking – this is an important question for a work at home mom to ask.
If you’d love to work from home, you can do it without any worries about scams if you deal directly with AT&T or IBM. Both are publicly traded, Fortune 500 corporations that are highly reputable. Securing a position with one of these companies might take a little extra research, but it could sure be worth it!
